The East End is the draw. The Hamptons, Montauk, and Fire Island fill up every summer, and the North Fork has turned into real wine country. Riverhead is the county seat, with Islip, Huntington, and Smithtown anchoring the western towns.
The Long Island Pine Barrens, a protected stretch of rare pine forest, sits in the middle of it all and supplies much of the area's drinking water.
